365 Reasons to go Sailing

(366 during leap year)

-  March -
1
Yap Day - Micronesia.  There are many holidays listed for March first - but Yap Day has to be the best - topless dancing by the villagers look like the pages of National Geographic that you drooled over when you were 13 years old.  Lots of fun - and you need lots of time off from work because it could take months to sail there.  Click on it - (if you dare.)
2
Texas Independence Day - United States of America.  I didn't know Texas was independent - but I'm surely in favor of it.
3
National Anthem Day - United States of America Seriously - click on it if you don't believe me.  Do you know all the words to the National Anthem?  No?  Where better to practice than on your sailboat, out on the water, where nobody can hear you.  Except your crew.  Poor buggers.  Explain to your boss about how your patriotism is so closely bonded to sailing - if he's an American, a true American (and you may have to remind him of this) how can he refuse?
4
Town Meeting Day (Vermont) - United States of America.  This is all there is for the fourth of March - but your attendance at the Town meeting of (insert the town you are from in Vermont), Vermont is mandatory.
5
Arrival of First Missionaries - French Polynesia.  There they were swimming naked in the pristine waters of the South Pacific - innocent, happy, carefree.  And then those stiff-necked missionaries arrived and put an end to all of it.  A sad day.  A sad, sad day indeed.  I can feel your need - you are despondent over this.  You truly need to go sailing.
6
Alamo Day - United States of America.  You're going to have to be a little creative to turn this one into an excuse to go sailing.  But I'm sure you can do it.  You are smarter than the boss, after all.  You should probably be the boss.  You would, too, if you didn't take so much time off to go sailing.  He should be thankful.  And let you go.
7 Peace Corps Day - United States of America. Sail for piece peace, I always say.
8
International Women's Day.  If you are a woman, you automatically get the day off.  And if you know a woman who is getting the day off, but you aren't a woman, you could volunteer to take her sailing.  And you should.  It's your duty.  The boss will just have to understand.
9
Baron Bliss Day - Belize. I don't make this stuff up.  This is all very well researched.  And to celebrate my hard work, and the Honorable, albeit dead, Baron Bliss, you should become Bliddful - and go sailing.
10
Harriet Tubman Day - United States of America.  Everone who knew Harriet, knew she loved to see people go sailing.  Honor Ms. Tubman's memory and untie those docklines.
11
Commonwealth Day - Tuvalu.  I knew Pennsylvania was a Commonwealth, and Virginia, I think.  But who knew Tuvalu?  In light of this slight, hoist that main and you just think about your transgressions against the virtually unknown Tuvalu.  Okay, I just checked.  It's an island in Polynesia.  They have lots of Holidays. I think nobody ever works.  A good ethic, if you ask me.  Research?  That's what I do. Its population of 12,373 makes it the second-least populous sovereign state in the world, with only Vatican City having fewer inhabitants.  See?
12
Employee Day - United States of America.  No further excuse needed.  It's also Moshoeshoe's Day - Lesotho.  I don't know what it is but it's sure fun to say.
13
Revolutionary Attack on the Presidential Palace - Cuba. Maybe it should happen more often.  Let's all get together on our sailboats and go over and attack.  I'll bring the beer.
14
Pi Day (Get it? 3.14?)  Hmmm.  Geek humor.  But coincidentally, also Einstein's Birthday.  And you know Einstein was a sailor. To honor him and Pi day (if you're feeling geekish) hoist that anchor, unfurl that jib.  Get out there on the water.
15 J.J. Robert's Birthday - Liberia.  J.J. gets way too little recognition.  Go sailing for J.J.
16
Black Press Day - United States of America;  Freedom of Information Day - United States of America;  Liberty Day - United States of America. There you have it - three, count 'em, three holidays in one. No excuses - take off that stupid hard hat and go sailing.  Unless you have trouble with jibing, then maybe take the hard hat with you.
17
St. Patrick's Day.  There are St. Patrick's Day Regatta's all over the world.  You are invited to attend the St. Patrick's Day Regatta of your choice.
18
Anniversary of the death of President Said Mohamed Cheikh - ComorosAnd what a sad, sad day that was.  And where the heck is Comoros? It's an island just off the east coast of Africa.  See how much you learn on the Frugal-Mariner?  And they have sailboats there.  Click on the link and scroll down and you'll see a sailing dhow sailing.  You should, too.
19
St., Joseph Expression de la juridiction Legba - Haiti. Lately, poor Haiti has had little to celebrate.  Help them by sailing for St., Joseph Expression de la juridiction Legba.  I couldn't find out much about it - it's some kind of voo doo holiday - and who do that voo doo like you doo?  I'm  probably going to turn into a wart or something for saying that.  And if voo doo is a religion of some sort, I apologize if I have offended anyone.  But if a sailboat returns to port with only a wart on board, it's me.
20
World Frog Day - International.  Who can resist Kermit?  Frogs are disappearing, going extinct.  We will be over run with flies and other insects if we don't save the frogs.  I'm serious about this - Sail to Save the Frogs!
21
Anniversary of Installation of Sultan of Terengganu - Malaysia;  Día de Nacimiento de Benito Ju rez (Birthday of Benito Ju rez) - Mexico;  Human Rights Day - South Africa;  Independence Day - Namibia;  International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination - International;  Mother's Day - Egypt & Syria;   National Tree Planting Day - Lesotho;  Navrus Tajikistan Nawroz (New Year's Day )  - Afghanistan;  (Have you made your Navrus Tajikistan Nawroz resolution?);    Nevruz Day - Albania;  Nooruz (Persian New Year) - Iran; Kyrgyzstan;Nov Ruz Bairam - Turkmenistan. Hey, wow!  Look at all those holidays!  Lot's of New Year's Days and a Mothers Day and a Birthday and an independence day thrown in for good measure.  And what do we have in the good ol' U.S. of A?  SQUAT! Nada. Zilch. Nuthin'.  So take your pick.  Or choose all of them.  Just take the day off.  And raise the ensign of your choice.
22
World Day for Water - International.  And I ask you; where better to celebrate the World Day for Water?              Well?  Answer the question.
23
World Meteorological Day - International.  Who comes up with this stuff? Well, I guess we'd best not question our good fortune.  Just take the day off and celebrate the weather.
24
Covenant Day - Northern Marianas.  And I think the Covenant was they promised to go sailing.  It's an Island - everybody goes sailing.  It's the law.
25
Maryland Day - United States of America.  Finally, a day off for the U.S.   Not from Maryland?  It's Okay, it's okay.  Maryland is generous and extends its holiday to you in hopes that you too may enjoy it as we Marylanders do.  (Hey, if it were Pennsylvania Day I would be a Pennsylvanianer - I'm not proud.  Or stupid.)
26
Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole Day (Hawaii) - United States of America.  He was a really good guy, that Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole.   And he's from Hawaii.  And Hawaii is an Island.  (The only state in the U.S. which is an Island except Rhode Island, which inexplicably is not an island.)  And you know what they do on islands during a Holiday?  THEY GO SAILING!  You can, too and practice saying Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole before you ask for the day off.
27
Skyscraper Day - United States of America.  It's Skyscraper Day.  I'm not even going to ask; I'm outta here!
28
Constitution Day (Serbia only) - Serbia.  Sorry don't have much to work with here.  Maybe pick something from the 21st - it has more than it needs, and really, who's going to know?
29
Earth Hour - 8pm Local Time - International.  You still need some time off; you've got to drive to the boat, stop and get some beer.  And some ice, don't forget the ice.  And untie the lines and get out there on the pond.  That's a lot to do.  For just a lousy hour.  Which begs the question - why only an hour.? This is your Earth.  This is my Earth.  It deserves much more than an hour.  I mean, rush hour lasts all day.  And what's so special about rush?
30
Doctor's Day - United States of America.  I don't get this one.  Is it for Doctor's?  They can't have the day off - what if somebody gets sick?  Maybe it's go to the Doctor's Day.  Well, I'm no Doctor, but I play one on the internet.  And I see you've been pretty tense lately and I prescribe a day on your sailboat on the water.  You need to relax, buster.
31
Transfer Day - US Virgin Islands - Celebrating when the Virgin Islands became ours and somehow simultaneously lost their virginity.  So we are transfering you, and your virginity, off to your sailboat.  No screwing around.  Just SAIL.
