Your First Boat

How to Talk Salty

Boater Education

The Cruising Dream
You've just signed on the dotted line and that shiny new (maybe that slightly used) boat is yours.  What do you need to know?  Everything from the Rules of the Road and how to navigate, to how to tie up your boat in a slip, and much much more.  This should get you started.
Where's the 'coaming'? What does 'close-hauled' mean? What's a downhaul, and a fender, and a fairlead? What do I do when the Captain says, "ready about' and he's looking right at me?  This is an abridged version of nautical terminology.  It doesn't include all of the jibber-jabber about the tall ships of the past - just what you need to know.  And the most important ones are underlined for you, so if you need to learn the basics in a hurry, concentrate on them and skip the rest... For now.
What do I need to learn, and where can I learn it?  Start here.
Boat insurance, like all insurance, is a funny thing.  You bet your boat is going to sink or get hit by lightning, or be involved in a collision.  The insurance company is betting that it won’t.  You hope to lose the bet.
Naming Your Boat
Re-Naming Ceremony
Many have the Dream:  Chuck it all, quit the job, sell the house, buy a boat, move aboard and go cruising. Well, we did it.  Almost a decade and a half ago.  We can tell you, it's great!  But not quite as simple as it sounds.
Some ideas of what to name your boat - and more importantly, what NOT to name your boat - so you don't come up with a lame name. The name you pick for your boat will reflect to others a little about you - about your intellect (or lack thereof)  and your worldliness (or lack thereof) or your sense of humor.
Boat de-naming and re-naming Ceremony (with guarantee). If you're superstitious, you'll want to read this carefully and follow everything here to the absolute letter. You would not want to tempt the fates, because, if you do not follow this ceremony, it is extremely bad luck.  You boat will sink, while caught in a dreadful storm, and simultaneously involved in a violent conflagration while being attacked by pirates.  And worse - yes, even worse...
