This has proven to be our most popular page. We did it just for fun, but we have had many, many links to it from other sites.
How is knowing this stuff going to make you a more Frugal Mariner? It's probably not going to make you more Frugal, but it will help make you more of a Mariner. If you don't already know this stuff, you should spend some time learning it.

Excuses
You want to go sailing. You absolutely must go sailing. The weather is perfect, the breeze is blowing, the sun is shining, your significant other has called and wants you to go sailing. However... you're at work. You can't just sneak out, well, maybe you can, but it might be difficult to come back in tomorrow. You need the perfect excuse to tell the boss that he just can't deny you.
Here's your excuse - it's a Holiday, a special Holiday, that just simply would not be right for you not to observe, whether it's national pride, religious, or of historical significance to you, your family and your heritage.
Just click on the month below and slide down to today's date to find your perfect excuse. Practice it so you sound sincere. (Remember what Eddie Haskell said, "The secret of success is sincerity. Once you can fake that, you've got it made." Actually, Jean Giraudoux said that, but nobody knows who that is - and everybody knows who Eddie Haskell is. Just don't think I'm slacking on my research here.) Then, Captain, grab your First Mate and crew, head down to the boat, untie the docklines, hoist the sails and go sailing! Arrgh! |
Just for fun...
We here at the Frugal Mariner are fans of lighthouses. We like the warm, fuzzy comfortable feeling they give you on those dark and stormy nights with their beckoning lights revolving, cutting through the fog, reflecting off the wild waves.
There lurks in many of us sailors, more so, it would seem, the cruising sailors, a need for poetry; a need to put into words the sights and sounds, the smells and sensations that the sun and the sea bring to us so that we might share them with friends, with others who cannot or will not enjoy the sea as we do.
There is something about sailing, the backbeat of the waves soothing the hull, the groaning of the tightening sheet as the wind stiffens and tugs at the sail; the air, the sky, the clouds, the sun, the feel of the tiller in the helmsman's hand as he makes a slight adjustment and the boat responds - these things, these feelings, to me, are poetry. I don't have the talent that others have to express these things, so I offer you some poetry about sailing by some of the masters.

We've searched and researched and gathered together for you quotes about boats and sailing and the sea. On the internet, movies, books, from friends. Saltwater Suzi and Captain Larry even have a few quotes in there. Fun on a winter day when you just want to think about sailing and not even look out the window.
There are a lot of boating links on the web. Finding some of the good ones can take a lot of time. We've one some of the looking for you. Here are some you will find interesting, informative or entertaining.
