Sound Signals
Why is this information included in The Frugal Mariner?  For the same reason  we included the sound signals page.   If you run into another  boat, it's going to be expensive.  Plus, if you print out the cheat sheet at the bottom...

Coast Guard Courtesy Exam

No, you don't have to study.  But there are a few things you need to do to get your boat ready for the season. The U.S. Coast Guard Courtesy Exam is  a safety check of your vessel to make sure that it is up to the minimum safety standards set by the U.S. Coast Guard.  It is conducted  by members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary or the U.S. Power Squadron.  They do not get paid for their services.   And they award you with a sticker that you can affix to your mast.  If you've got one, I think there's more likelihood that someone else will get boarded.

Recognizing Navigation Lights

Right of Way rules on the water can seem complex and confusing especially to the beginner but even to the more experienced boater.  To further increase the complexity, there are two sets of rules, Inland and Offshore   Obviously, you need to know the rules which apply where you use your boat.

The Rules of the Road (the ColRegs)

Get out your calculator or sharpen up your pencil.  Here are a few little formulas you'll want to know.  Nothing complex - if you want complex, we've got a link or two for you.
