No, you don't have to study. But there are a few things you need to do to get your boat ready for the season. The U.S. Coast Guard Courtesy Exam is a safety check of your vessel to make sure that it is up to the minimum safety standards set by the U.S. Coast Guard. It is conducted by members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary or the U.S. Power Squadron. They do not get paid for their services. And they award you with a sticker that you can affix to your mast. If you've got one, I think there's more likelihood that someone else will get boarded.

Right of Way rules on the water can seem complex and confusing especially to the beginner but even to the more experienced boater. To further increase the complexity, there are two sets of rules, Inland and Offshore Obviously, you need to know the rules which apply where you use your boat.
